Sometimes i use a follow focus, sometimes i don't, it depends on if it's really needed. Some folks are just starting out and can't afford a follow focus just yet, but they are becoming darn cheap at under 100 bucks for a basic one these days.
So whatever your reasons for not wanting a follow focus, a focus assist might be just the ticket for helping you out with your focus pulls.
This concept is very basic, add a lever to the focus ring, to give you something to manipulate instead of trying to get your hand around the focus ring. This isn't a new concept, many ENG zoom lenses have small nubs on the focus and/or zoom rings. The product this shooter has discovered, is made to help open jars. Jars are round, lenses are round, match in heaven! As the shooter also points out, since it's made of pliable silicon, the flexibility adds a bit of dampening/smoothening to your start/stop.
